Hello !
Welcome To A Busy Few Weeks
I am terribly excited about a new program that we will be rolling out. There are a few pieces that still need to be put in place, but let me say that this program will thrill all of our readers across all platforms and be a significant boom to many local businesses. I can't tell you too much, but it will be in partnership with some names you know and love and hopefully be up and running in a few weeks! Watch out Annapolis and Anne Arundel County!
Before we know it the holidays will be barreling down on us! I know that the Annapolis Business Association has been busy gearing up for Light Up Annapolis, the Midnight Madness shopping nights and more!
But there are a lot of other must-see or must-do events coming up, so please take some time to read the "Around Town" section below!
Around Town
In chronological order--clear your calendars!
Docs Talk. Anne Arundel Medical Center is launching a "Dr. Oz" type show and you can be a member of the studio audience for the premiere. The first show will be taped tomorrow--October 25th at 6:00pm at the Doorden Institute on the 7th Floor of the Health Sciences Pavilion. The topic this month will be The Truth About Breast Cancer & Heart Disease.
BOO! There are only 4 more dates for the Psycho Safari! This is the annual production at the Bowie Baysox Stadium in Bowie. The production will run Friday-Monday (October 28-31) from 6:30pm to 11:00pm. It is definitely PG-13 and full of scares and frights along the way. I took my daughter and a friend over the weekend and it was well worth the price of admission. Be prepared for a wait--our line was about an hour long but I heard that it was shorter on Friday nights. You can catch a copy of our admittedly bad video here! Annapolis Fringe Festival. This year has been a year of festivals. It kicked off with the Eastport A Rockin, and will end with the Annapolis Fringe Festival. This is an all day and night event for everyone. The day will feature family friendly performances and the evening will bring about some more adult themes. This is a perfect way to spend a cool Saturday and unwind before the holidays. So mark your calendar for November 12th. Oh, and the good news, the festival is a benefit to our favorite Maryland Hall For The Creative Arts!
Hot Topics! As sad as it is, bad news is popular. I am sure The Capital will concur, but the most read stories over the past month at Eye On Annapolis were all downers. And I do want to point out that another young life was lost this month. This year has been tough and adults and kids alike just need to slow down and be aware of their surroundings. I can't help but think many families would not be grieving had someone taken a bit more notice of things around them.
Have you checked out our new blog called Chowin' Down. We are sending undercover "critics" to restaurants and bars for honest reviews. We are not going to sugar coat it like the local paper or cater to advertisers like the local city magazine. The columns are a recap of of the experience by regular people who happened to be out eating on their own dime! Good, bad, or indifferent. If you are interested in being a critic, shoot me an email.
Local Flavors!
On the local biz front, we have gained some more sponsors this month. These guys help us pay the bills and help make our County such a special one. Please support local businesses when possible. I encourage you to check these supporters out--give their ads a click and see what it happening in your local community!
The Schooner Woodwind is wrapping up their season and getting ready to pull the schooners out for the winter. If you can, get out and give them a shot. The upside is that there will be fewer crowds, cooler temperatures and more brisk winds. Perfect for a few hours on the Bay! It is not just for tourists!
Bill Bateman's Bistro has recently opened in Edgewater and is a welcome addition to the area dining scene. Known for their fantastic wings, the rest of the menu is just as good. They are located at 121 Mitchell's Chance Lane (behind the K-Mart) in Edgewater. Other county locations include Severna Park, Glen Burnie and BWI. Visit the Edgewater location's facebook page for some fun!
Chesapeake Bay Trust. You see them all around--the cool license plates depicting the Chesapeake Bay. Why not ditch the boring white plate and do a little bit to help save our most important resource. When you renew your registration, help clean up the Bay--and after the storms we had--the Bay needs some cleaning up!
Rams Head On Stage. They have been around for more than 20 years. That is quite a run in Annapolis and it is no wonder. Rams Head On Stage is known for bringing world class music to our back door. Check out the schedule and I am sure you will find a favorite--old or new! And to be honest, the venue is one of the best--small, intimate and some awesome acoustics!
Easy Skinny Life is a new website devoted to the healthy lifestyle, including exercise and food. Solid actionable tips on how to maintain your health from a woman who has been doing it all her life!
Zachary's Jewelers. There is not much that can be said about Zachary's that has not been said before. They are a staple of the Downtown Annapolis scene and now in Severna Park. They are the model for a community involved business. And, they have free monthly kid events on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in addition to their fabulous baubles.
Sonic of Edgewater is coming. Really it is. They have broken ground and this new to us concept of fast food looks to be open in late October or early November as long as the County inspectors let them do their job!We are looking forward to this one.
Bayside Bride is an awesome new project by local photographer Natalie Franke. This is a one stop resource for any wedding related information in the Chesapeake Bay area. Photographers, venues, caterers, transportation, planners, preparations, clothing, gifts, and more! If you are getting married in the Chesapeake Bay region, Bayside Bride is the one site that must be bookmarked.
Homestead Gardens is a fantastic community company and has done so much for the area.Their annual Fall Festival is in full swing and if you are looking for some great fall foliage deals, pumpkins, or a great event to take the kids and spend an afternoon--head on over to Central Avenue & Davidsonville Road. (Insider tip for the Moms and Dads--they sell beer--shh.)
Please take a moment and check them out. Give the ad (on the right) or the link (above) a click and explore what they have to offer! You won't be sorry!
Former Mayor Moyer Talks
Josh Cohen has been Mayor for over 2 years and former Mayor Ellen
Moyer has been relatively silent. No more! Ellen Moyer and former
City Attorney Steve Kling have a radio program on 1430 WNAV and they have agreed to do a show with Eye On Annapolis in mid-November.
Our newsletter subscribers will have a chance to ask the lingering
questions of the former Mayor and her chief legal consultant. What type
of legacy did she leave behind? Is she being unfairly thrown under the
bus? What about that "financial train wreck"? What is in the cards for a
political future for Ellen Moyer? The agenda is up to you. For details
on the show and how to participate, please read this members only post.To ask a question, you can leave a comment in that post or send me an email directly.Your identity will be protected.
If you enjoy Eye On Annapolis, please do us a favor and let others know. A word of mouth referral is by far the most complimentary. Let your friends, neighbors, co-workers and enemies know about us! Let the businesses you patronize know about how affordable it is to reach more than 60,000 local people each and every month!
If you are reading a post, take the time to leave a comment! We want to get the conversation started. If you enjoyed or want to share a post, we try to make it easy for you if you are on Facebook--just click the little "like" button at the top left of each post and if you are on Twitter, there is a "re-tweet" button there as well and most recently, we added a Google +1 button--just give them a click.
If you are on facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, FourSquare etc.--please follow, fan, subscribe, etc to us there as well. We do a lot of fun stuff and giveaways all the time and it makes it a lot more personal for everyone! All the links are at the bottom of the newsletter!
And some more bragging. Since we last thumped our chest, we have continued to grow. We now have 41,602 fans on our facebook page, 7,261 people following us on Twitter, and 2,987 people receiving this newsletter! And for that, I personally thank you!
And last but not least, as always--we're
glad you are here!
All
the best and see you around the County,
John W. Frenaye, Jr
Publisher
PPS--have you noticed that we have been making subtle changes to the site? This month, it is pink (well as close as I can get with my limited HTML knowledge) for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For football games and holidays and events we will swap out the logo with a google-ish doodle--next up Halloween! What do you think?
We're socially connected. Are you?
